Restoring Card Reader Drives

First I want to say that my memory is bad and I don't know if I
disabled my card reader. I did install a 3rd drive in my XPS 410, and
maybe that is related to what I am posting about.

My card reader drives do not show up, and I want to enbale the SD
drive. I went into the System | Device Manager, and could not see the
drives to enable them. I looked under the disk drive category where I
thought I saw them before, but they aren't there.

I went through the Add New Hardware wizard, and that didn't find them.

I think the next step I will try is to open the case, "unplug" the
card reader drive, boot up the computer, shut down the computer, plug
the card reader drive back in, and start the computer up, hoping that
then it will find it as new hardware. Is that a good approach?

If anyone knows what the problem is your input is appreciated. If I
can't figure it out I'll just use a USB card reader. Thanks.

This may sound stupid but I thought you disabled or removed your card
reader from some earlier post??? If I'm wrong just ignor this.

Assuming I'm wrong above, my first instinct would be that the drivers
are missing so I'd probably try to reinstall them. If that doesn't
help, then I'd try your approach (I'm lazy and don't like to open the
case unless necessary).

The earlier post probably discussed that I am going to add a 4th drive
which would be where the card reader is. I haven't done that yet
though. I am waiting for a good Seagate or WD 500G in the low $100
price range. I have seen Maxtors at $109 but want a different brand.

Until your post it didn't occur to me to go find the drivers off the
Dell site and install them. I thought that I would have seen them in
the device manager, and when I did the add hardware check it didn't
find any.

So, I am going to do what you said first, and if that doesn't work
then I am going to do the boot process I wrote above. If that doesn't
work then I'll use a USB card reader and forget about trying to get
the one built in to the computer to work. Thanks!

That sounds reasonable to me. It will certainly reseat anything that might
not be plugged in properly.
