I need to understand the different between red and black cables to my
motherboard plugs.
ASUS p5L vm 1394. manual stated red plug 1 is for hard drive and red plug 2
is for data,
black plug 3 & 4 is for data devices.
Question will a DVD writer work in the red #2 plug with a red cable. Also
will it work in Black # 3 or 4 with a black cable. and will a red cable work
in place of a black cable. Or these cables inter changeable..
If some one would straighten me out on this I sure will appreciate it. I am
72 years old and haven't worked with building computers since The ide
cables. I built it with a sata hard drive on red #1 and both dvd on ide
cable, now I fine it necessary to replace one of the ide dvd with a sata dvd
so I can have the ide for another purpose.
Thanks for any help.
Boris

I thought that, if you want to boot from the device, it had to be on a
'master' (red) connector? If that's right then surely the OP would probably
be better off connecting his optical drive to a red connector?

Good move. It's what I would do. Have all potential boot devices on
connectors designated"master".

You're welcome.
