scan lines with HP PSC 1210

When scanning images with my HP PSC 1210, I always get annoying lines in the
picture, especially in dark areas of the image. This also happens when
copying. I was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me. Is
there a setting I have configured wrong? It has never worked properly.
(The printer works great, though.) I am running Windows ME on an HP
Pavilion 7940 PC. Thanks!
