Hi

I still have my trusty old 6100C... Problem is that I have a new PC
with Vista x64 on it. Am I correct in assuming that I would be pushing
my luck trying to get my old friend running on my new OS ? - it is
paired up with an Adaptec 2904 SCSI card which appears to be
incompatible with vista (Vista sees it as a 2940UW and suggests that the
driver is not working - usual !)

Now I'm happy to shell out on an appropriate SCSI card such as the
Adaptec 29160 which IS supported in vista 32 and 64 But there's no point
if the PC wont "see" it as HP claim there isn't even a WIA driver for
the 6100c....

Anyone ? (Ben Myers are you still here ? :P)

The 29160 is not very compatible with the 6100C, because it has a 68-pin wide
SCSI external connector. The 6100C is narrow 50-pin (or 25-pin?) SCSI and
requires a SCSI cable with either a 25-pin connector on the other end (as with
the 2904) or a 50-pin mini-SCSI connector as required by the 2940.

Any Adaptec SCSI adapter with a W in its model identifier, like 2940W, has the
same 68-pin external connector. It is a pain to mess around with the conversion
cables necessary to lash up a narrow external device to a wide external
connector. It also results in a SCSI bus with some electronic impedence issues
which may make a difference in reliability.

What would probably be best is the last version of the 2940, namely the 2940U,
with the U standing for Ultra (faster data rates). I would think that a plain
2940 would suffice. But the 2904 is a bit brain damaged.

HP won't provide anything at all for the 6100C in 64-bit Vista, ever. I have
not looked at its 6100C support in 32-bit Vista, but I doubt much will be there.
However, with a supported SCSI adapter, Vista will "see" the 6100C as a SCSI
device. How to make it scan is another question. Probably with 3rd party
scanner software that supports SCSI devices and runs with Vista. So far, I
have generally steered clear of Vista myself... Ben Myers

According to the Adaptec web site, the 2940 has a 32-bit Vista driver available
for download, but the web site is moot about a 64-bit Vista driver.

The 19160 has a 50-pin miniSCSI external connector, and it appears that Vista 32
and 64 both have built-in support for the 19160, 29160, and 39160, all of which
have the same chipset and, thus, the same drivers. The 29160N also has a
50-pin external connector.

My suggestion is to go for the 19160 or 29160N, but all bets are off as to how
the scanner will operate with Vista 64.

I'd be curious to learn of the outcome if you get one of these adapters... Ben

Wow! Yes! Dell-branded 29160N are selling for peanuts, several of them selling
for $5 or less plus reasonable shipping charge... Ben Myers

Heh - the guy was basically selling it for postage+insurance and as you
say peanuts for the card itself, cost me £15 UKP including cables(!) =
$30 US (roughly) which I was more than happy to pay, given what these
things cost new.... now all I need is for the scanner to work, otherwise
I am in the market for a SCSI scanner w/document feeder that works on
Vista 64 Mind you the 6100 can go to my parents for their XP machine
I am about to get round to building (have almost enough "bits" in my PC
spares box so it won't go to waste. Have had it since new, nearly 10
years and am not keen to ebay or get rid of it.. I know its old but its
still functioning and I'm kind of attatched to it so fingers crossed!

Well I got the Scsi Card, turned out to be a 19160, and LOOKS like a
proper card, my old 2904 looks (and is) positively weedy by comparison.
Plugged in scanner, said lots of prayers and booted up. Card detected
in Vista x64 no probs. Looked for the scanner, was showing up as a
C2520A (or whatever the designation is) SCSI device. Downloaded 32bit XP
version of Deskscan 2.9 (shudder...) and also the 675en.exe (version of
precision scan pro 2.03 that I had working in XP. Deskscan wouldnt
install (thank fudge) and I was hopeful when Precision scan pro
installed. Fired up precision scan pro, which (surprisingly) opened
fine. Got the dreaded "Sorry, Scanner Not detected."

Just as I was about to scream/cry/start looking for another scanner, the
thought occured to me to go download the latest VueScan trial... sure
enough installed and was promted to "install a driver that supports most
scanners" (nothing like being specific eh?!) did so and waited for the
routine to finish.

Ran VueScan, and was gutted to see a "scanner not found message" Looked
sadly down at my faithful 6100c thinking "thats it, you're going to my
parents... the end". Then it occured to me that I hadn't rebooted in
any of this, this is SCSI after all not USB. Soo I shutdown Vista x64
and waited for the reboot......

Loaded up Vuescan and in the "source" tab...

Scanjet 6100

Have done a test scan and all would appear to work!1one1. Obviously
Vuescan is only a trial and as such all scans are watermarked but I will
remedy that in due course.

The resolution box in Vuescan only goes up to 600 dpi but that may be a
trial limitation (have left on auto) - even if it isnt, the scanner
works... thats it, I'm not going to be scanning "Mega Rez" - I haven't
done so previously and don't feel the need to start now.

I even have an HP Scanjet 6100 showing up under Scanners and Cameras in
control panel!

Only downside is that I cant find a way of uninstalling the
Precisionscan software (the uninstall.isu isnt recognised) I can "Roll
back" if I have to but I will explore other ways of gettting rid first.

A happy ending I guess... but boy was I worried for a while

cheers

Andrew

for the adaptec 2904 , you can force driver :
"Adaptec AIC-7870 PCI SCSI Controller (Emulated)"

on device manager, select the icon of the scsi adapter (probably with a "!"
to tell there is no driver)
select properties, the driver Tabs, click on "update driver"
select "browse my computer for driver software"
click "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

if you have "select your device's type from the list", select "Storage
controllers"

if you have "show compatible hardware" checkbox, be sure it is unchecked
then select "Adaptec" as manufacturer, and "Adaptec AIC-7870 PCI SCSI
Controller (Emulated)" as model

this is "as you own risk", but as I known, this is good for adaptec 2904,
2940, 2940UW (but not U2W)

tell me if the result is good (I'm confident at 95%)

after, your scanjet is compatible with vuescan

no problem hehe - the 19160 I ended up with is a nice card Having a
few issues with regard to SCSI termination (not sure whether
internal/external, although I think it is external, since the Bios seems
to think there are 15 (!)other devices connected besides my scanner and
Zip drive lol. Not really a problem, just the BIOS count is fine for
two lines and on the third line says too many terminated devices or
something like that.

thanks for the tip anyway
