My ThinkPad 600 with Win2K had integral serial port set to COM 2, internal
modem (which was assigned to COM 3) disabled. Installed a virtual serial
port driver with COM 3 as input and COM 4 and COM 5 as virtual ports. Then
added 4-port USB hub with USB mouse, GPS receiver, and USB to 2-Serial Port
Adapter connected, which added more serial port assignments.
Uninstalled the virtual serial port driver, removed the USB hub, GPS, and
serial port adapter. System hardware utility now shows only COM 2, but when
I try to change that port number, Windows shows COM ports 2 through 9 as "in
use," apparently as a result of the hardware and software that is now not
installed. Is there some way to regain use of these port assignments?
