Well, I don't own one, so I cannot give any first hand info.
These are the modes supported by the SIL4723:
http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/SiI...rief_FINAL.pdf
RAID Level Modes
* FAST/RAID 0
* SAFE/RAID 1
* BIG/Spanning
* JBOD/Port Multiplier
The Asus manual shows a header block, and there are two jumpers being
used. Using two jumpers, there are four possible values of two jumpers.
The mode Asus has not documented, is "Port Multiplier", where the
jumpers are removed. Now, I don't think "Port Multiplier" mode would
help, because I've never seen a statement that an Intel chipset would
see and comprehend a Port Multiplier properly.
In any case, you can experiment. What you want, is to apply either
Spanning mode (with one disk plugged into the SIL4723) or if that
doesn't work, try the Port Multiplier mode. Then, enter the Intel
RAID setup in the BIOS, and check to see if the "virtual device"
being offered by the SIL4723, is registering properly. In other
words, the "id string" from the disk probably won't come through,
but a bogus identity offered by the SIL4723 will be used to identify
the one connected disk instead.
In this review, there is a page which mentions EZ-Backup, and they
noted a problem getting the thing to change modes. While the BIOS
you are using, is probably more up to date than the one used here,
you might want to look at the EZ-Backup page here.

Once the "virtual volume of one disk" makes its way through the
SIL4723, you should then be able to set up whatever array you
can manage, on the Southbridge. The following diagram is
best viewed in Courier font, and shows how the SIL4723 typically
connects to the Southbridge on an Asus board.

RAID RAID
Post back your results, if you get it to work. Don't forget
to use the BIOS "Ez-backup RAID mode change" [Enabled] option,
to force the BIOS to re-read the jumper setting of the SIL4723.
The procedure is two steps, to prevent accidents.
