This is actually a gigabyte mobo, but I think the question is general
enough to get some quality opinions here.
Gigabyte 478 mobo with ATi 1300 AGP 8x. System goes dark a couple
times over a couple days (no video). Reboot... work OK. Then it
crashes and won't start. Fiddle a bit, it boots but after a couple
tries declares "BIOS not found". Fiddle some more over a couple days
(no changes to BIOS) and it seems to have a BIOS again. Do some more
testing. No video after a few more boots. Replace AGP card with old
Dyn 128 PCI card. Video returns. Seems semi normal but card in AGP
slot is not working.
Assuming the mobo is bad, I get a P4P800 and install it. Install AGP
card. No video. Install PCI card - video. Now I figure it must have
been the card. Order a new AGP card. System works! So, video card was
bad.
So, question: What are the chances that the only problem with the
first mobo (boots with cheap PCI card) was the AGP card? I am a little
hesitant to put my new AGP card in the slot to see if it works... I'm
wondering if it blasted the AGP card and killed it. I don't want to
kill the new one.
Opinions? Is it high risk to put a good AGP card in there to test? I
have to toss the mob o, but it's value is about the same as the AGP
card, so I don't want to be foolish either.
