Slow boot up in WIN XP

Same thing happened to me. After a clean install everything was fine until I started getting my updates from microsoft. After 4 days and 8 more clean installs with calling microsoft to reactivate I finally found the culprit. It was a faulty usb device. I unplugged all my usb devices from the back and replaced them one at a time. This fixed my problem and I hope it helps you as well.
