Sorry, this is nothing to do with laptops, the reason being that it's
on behalf of a friend and I'm at a loss to know where else to ask!
She's stuck with a hand-me-down desktop that she can't afford to
replace. It's adequate for her purposes in general, but it takes an
eternity to open a folder. I once tried to open a USB memory stick,
but gave up after sitting watching the egg timer for ten minutes or
more. Can anyone suggest where the problem might be? I can't see
anything untoward in Task Manager (Performance tab), but I'm no
expert.

Pentium III 847 Mhz; 1 GB RAM; Hard Drive divided into 3 partitions,
each about 19 GB. Windows XP Professional.

TIA,

Try a scan with MalwareBytes. It may have to be reformatted if it's being used for a DDoS attack.
