No big deal, but peculiar:

I am told that PDF is an intermediate form
for printing with OS X.

If I print from AppleWorks, Word X, Excel,
almost anything, it goes fairly quickly.

If I click Preview with Acrobat already running,
the page images appear almost immediately.

But if I print the resulting image from Acrobat,
it takes ages (comparatively).

???

That's because the code generated by AppleWorks, Word, and Excel is
probably pure postscript after it's translated from whatever document
you're printing.

I think PDF files are translated into high-density bitmap images before
their sent to the printer. This may be a design feature or bug in
Acrobat. I've had similar problems with some label-printing
packages--they take forever to print on MacOS X (e.g. 12 minutes) but
the same file only takes 1 minute in 9.2.

I've had the same thing happen, but only with inkjet printers. Preview
prints normally, but if I print through Acrobat, I may as well go cook
dinner (including going to the store!).
