Install a NAT Router between her computer and the internet device,
install quality AV software, enable the minimal Windows XP firewall, and
remove any soft firewalls other than Windows Firewall - making sure to
disable file/printer sharing, remove any exceptions, etc...

Thanks but I don't want to use XP firewall because it doesn't protect
outgoing packets. The router is already in place but it too does the
same thing as XP.

Thanks tho for the reply.

Ignore her - it does a decent job :-)

Otherwise, try Kerio... there`s another one called Jetico which once got
very good reviews, but I haven`t heard much since they released a new
version (its another free one)

thanks. Yeah I agree with you but I think she is getting annoyed by
the pop up warnings. Personally I like ZA.

How old is she ? - does she know what spyware can do to a machine ?

If she has any college / school work on there she really doesn't want to
lose, try pointing out that with the exception of hardware failure,
she's safer with than without it :-}

I used to use ZA and now use McAfee. They seem similar but there are
times I want to shut down the firewall entirely, and I can't figure
out how to do it in McAfee.

Why doesn't she like ZA?

Actually, many routers, the ones that are close to being real firewalls,
can block by port in the outbound direction, can also filter content out
of http sessions....

Not all routers are as limited as the XP Firewall.

You're a master of the understatement. NOTHING is as limited as the Windows
firewall, unless "no firewall" is to be considered a firewall... Ben Myers

I haven't asked her but will. My guess is the pop up warnings. I use
ZA also and get annoyed with all the pop ups but at least I know it's
doing its job.
