Hello all.

I have been battling with this problem for some time and I finally
found the solution I want to share with you.

Problem:
=======

- You have an HP PSC multifunction printer (OfficeJet)
- Installation goes according to plan until you are asked to plug the
printer
- You get a green OK, then installation ends

Next step should be a screen asking you to register the product,
followed by a set-up wizard for the advanced models.

If this last steps never happens but you do see very briefly a
"Windows Installer box" appear then disappear when you logon, then you
have the problem for which I now have a solution.

If software has been installed yet, read B first.

Procedure:

A) If software has not been installed yet:

a.1) Disconnect printer
a.2) run SETUP.EXE from original CD or download new software from
HP (150+ MB !)
a.3) SETUP asks for a temporary folder to extract files (ie.
C:\TEMP\HP-SW)
a.4) After extraction, WAIT before pressing "Next" !
a.5) Create a new folder where the software will be installed (ie.
C:\Program Files\HP)
a.6) Create subfolders: "Digital Imaging\Product" under folder
created in a.5
a.7) Open 2 windows: SETUP\PRODUCT under temporary folder (a.3),
and the one created in a.6
a.8) Copy the contents of PRODUCT\*.* folder from the temporary
folder to the installation folder

In short:

COPY "C:\Temp\HP-SW\Setup\Product\*.*" "C:\Program Files\HP\Digital
Imaging\Product\*.*"

a.9 Continue installation normally

If all goes well, Task Manager will show 3-6 processes named
"HPxxxxx.exe", not just one. After a few minutes, you should be asked
to register, bla-bla...

If you open HP Director and you see there the icon of your device,
then it worked!

B) If you already tried to install software:

b.1) Download the "Software Cleanup Utility" for your printer,
install and run
b.2) Unplug printer, reboot
b.3) Follow procedure in A

PS:

If you have different symptoms, you can still try this approach.
If it still doesn't solve your problem have a look at:

Hope this helps!

Anybody ever do a sanity check on the poor buggers who wrote these software
installs and threw them over the wall, much to our dismay? ... Ben Myers
