I recently upgraded my computer to a new hdd and a dvd rw.
Before the upgrade i was running 2 hdd (and still am) Cd Wr and Cdrom
on a 230watt psu. I removed the Cd wr and replaced it with the DVD wr.
The cd rom worked for a little while then stopped working and wasn't
getting any power. I guessed the cable had come loose and so
reinserted it. On booting it powers up but when Xp is running it has
no power. Checked IDE cable too and it seems fine. I'm guessing that
the power supply is not enough and that i was lucky even with the 2
drives before but is the DVD Wr taking up more power?
Answers on a postcard please!!

Your power supply is too small. You should have about a 400 Watt GOOD
QUALITY power supply for your system. As it is you stand a chance of
burning out some of the computer's components with that undersized unit.

Thats what i though, but symptoms have got even worse!
Machine is now freezing, even the mouse is freezing, DVD rom is now
stuck however its now detecting the cd rom again. Its frozen about 5
times during this message. We're even havig booting problems, to the
extent its very slow if not it freezes.

I've now been paid so i'm off for a power supply, upgrading is
expensive I just spent 200 quid getting a dvd wr in it and a new
hard drive:| oh well!
I'll let you know how it goes with this new power supply!!

"230watt psu"

There's your problem.

Purchase an Antec, Sparkle/Fortron Source, or Enermax power supply of no
less than 350W.
