All,
Dell Dim 8300 with XP Home...

<rant>
It bothers me that programs such as Sonic DVD now, and Realaudio insist on
placing the automatic update programs in the startup folder, and have them
running all the time! I'm sure they don't take up too much resources, but
they really don;t give you the option of whether you want this or not. A
better way, IMHO is to check for updates periodically when you start the
program (once a month) and not rob resources daily for updates that come out
say, once every two months for these programs.
<rant off>

Now that said, is there a typical list of startup programs that can be
trashed, others that need to stay..typical system install...Dell
preinstalled MS works, Realaudio and other multimedia components, DVD-r CD-r
utilities, And then the taskbar "control panels" for SB live. Obviously I
want the Windows Update to stay

I can uncheck the startup programs using MsConfig...how do I remove the item
from the list....probably a registry key.

Most of these things startup due to registry entries in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

I have VB kill scripts that I use to remove these entries.

The registry entries are re-created everytime you run the offending program.
So I put the kill script in that same run key. Every time I log on, the
offending entries are killed.
