Still Camera with Webcam Function

I am looking for a digital camera that functions as a webcam in Mac OS
X. I have found that all of Fuji's recent cameras can be used as a
webcam. But, the fine print says:

FujiFilm FinePix
* USB mode (DSC, PC-Cam) - the latter option lets you use the A310 as a
webcam for videoconferencing; Windows only

Minolta Dimage Xt
* For the camera to be connected directly to the computer and used as a
remote imaging device, the computer must be equipped with a USB port as
a standard interface. The computer and the operating system must be
guaranteed by their manufacturers to support USB interface. This
function cannot be used with Macintosh computers.

So, has anybody had success in operating a webcam in Mac OS X with a
still camera (instead of a dedicated webcam)?

TIA.

This may be a silly question, but why not buy a web cam? There
are web cams for $50 or so that will work with OS X if I am not
mistaken.

Can somebody explain why this is so?

I tried a bit if my Dimage Xt would work as a webcam via Virtual PC, but
I did not get that to work.

Why? Xt is a propriety usb device so it's hard to write anything for
it. Unless Minolta pays their people to do it don't count on the driver
for Mac. BTW it works on Virtual PC.
