The key thing is for something with built in ASIO 2 support, recording at
24-bit/96kHz and also a very high SNR. ASIO is possible with 'conusmer'
cards but a dedicated sound card offers the very low latency required.

Thankfully card specs are much better than they used to be, but there's
still a need for more specialist cards for use by musicians and sound
engineers.
