I have a problem that has dogged me now for months and I have completely run
out of ideas. When I reboot my system, 9 times out of 10 it will freeze at
the blank screen after the welcome screen and I have to use the power button
to switch it off and start up again. After this it will run perfectly for
months - as long as I don't switch it off.
If I shut it down completely and come back, say in the morning, and start it
up again, it starts great but...after about 15/20 minutes it will freeze and
again I have to switch it off to start it again. When I install new
software, rather than rebooting, I shut the computer down and start up again
and everything works OK. It seems as long as I shut it down completely and
start it straight up again everything is OK.
When it freezes during use it does so completely randomly, there seems to be
no pattern to it.
I have tried replacing RAM and all virus, spyware, adware, windows, -
everything is up-to-date and I can confidently say she is as clean as a
whistle.
It is a Tiny machine so obviously any help there is out of the question
(although it is out of warrenty anyway)

I'm inclined to think it is a hardware problem but I'm at a loss as to how
to track it down. Is there any software out there that could track what is
happening so I could see it when it is started again? Has anybody any
ideas???

Its an AMD 64 3000 with 768MB RAM

IBM has general diagnostics available for specific boxes that thay sell.
Visit their site for you particular make and model. These diagnostics
are available as downloads. For example for example:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-50556
which has a "tools and utilities" link,
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=SERV-TOOLS

Again, search for your particular box and model number.

The same symptoms on one of my PCs turned out to be temperature. It
was way over the top when first switched started up because the
processor fan ran too slowly for a few minutes.

Steve: A very wise observation. Dust accumulation in the box
can cause heat buildup. Likewise the system may be poorly designed
for heat dissipation; in this latter case one can add an auxillary
fan for very little money; for example, a slot fan like:

Hmm. I don't know where that logs its stuff. But id SP2 did noch
change things, this looks like a hardware issue indeed.

Since you have both start-up problems (definitely not overheating
so fast) and freezes while it runns, I suspect the PSU. The start-up
is pretty definite. The system draws signifiantly more current during
start-up. The freeze after 15/20 minutes is less so. It may or may not
be related.

I would advise you to test with a different PSU, with preferrably
higher power rating.
