I'm breaking in a P4 2.4 400 at default settings, with boxed fan I just
purchased (costa rica 4/30/3 pack date). It's replacing an old P4 1.8A
which wouldn't get much higher than 2.2 at 1.65V (I prefer keeping the
Vcore low, like 1.6 or below). The 1.8A was actually drifting over time -
becoming slower, when only using a voltage of 1.6! I did use it pretty
much daily for about one year...

At any rate, I had lapped the 1.8A and its stock heatsink (removed that
foil), and it helped drop the CPU temps from 55'C to 52'C under load
(running cpuburn4 for extended period of time), with 35'C or so idle. I
have not done this on the 2.4, as I have no plans to (maybe a few months
down the road, if I want to). I do recall, that when I removed the
heatsink from the 1.8A after some months of use, it was only making
contact around the edges of the chip heat spreader.

For the new 2.4, cpuburn loading gets the CPU up to 60'C, with 38'C idle
(after loaded for a few hours, idle temp same before/after). This seems
excessive to me, especially for default settings. I'm guessing the cpu
heat spreader is concave as hell (as I've found to be the case for all
P3/P4 chips I've worked with for the past year), but I really don't want
to lap it down (kinda sux to remove all ID markings and probably void the
3 year warrantee). Also, unfortunately I can't use that new-fangled
copper 7000 fan that's been touted lately in here (not compatible with my
mobo).

Suggestions?

Default Re: P4 2.4 temperature

Grab some good thermal goop and that could help ya (I use OCZ's new Ultra 2
stuff... works well). Lapping the heatsink will also help, grab a kit for
that from elitecool.com
