They are modified desktop processors, they run hot, the fan will run constantly, the fan is not silent, and if you can get one hour from the battery, you will be doing about average. That said, they are fast and capable, and you should look into a unit with dedicated, not shared, video RAM and a good video card. This will let you get the most performance from the machine. Frankly, I would not trade my Sony 2.6Mhz Vaio with its ATI Radeon 9000 video adapter and its magnificent display. But, I don't need mobility since I am a hermit anyway. Otherwise, if you need mobility with several hours of battery life, look into the Centrino models. Some can be had with dual batteries for maybe 6-7 hours of mobile use and all have integrated wireless. Somewhat the same performance level but much more mobile with the Centrino processor. Q |

My Toshiba 1415 with a 2GHZ mobile Celeron (basically the same as a P4 with a smaller cache and a few other defeatures) works great. Fan goes on often but not for very long (10 seconds at a time) and is quiet. Battery lasts two hours or slightly more. The machine gets warm on my legs but does not burn them. A 2.2GHZ P4-M should be very similar but might come with a higher capacity than mine.
