Definately offer me suggestions. I am about to buy my first laptop and thats
why i am not sure what the best thing is... To get more ram or a higher
processor. Any other ideas are most welcome.

Why do You even consider to buy an old laptop
from the terrible P4 generation?

Well i bought one with an athlon xp. the fan does not run all the time.
speed is good. i bought one with 256mb and had the firm fit an extra 256mb
of generic ram. that cost £40 or so. genuine compaq ram was £129.
Balance is the key to the system i stupidly forgot that. motherboard
chipset is important. so is hard disk performance.

although the advert said 16mb mobility radeon it is actually using system
ram. which i can change from 16 to 32 or 64.

The usb i assumed would be 2.0 but it wasn't. also although the picture
displayed showed a firewire socket mine shipped with that blanked off. i
bought a firewire card which was faulty. bought another but that seems to be
too slow?

at least one card bus slot Card bus is faster than the old pcmcia
standard. built in firewire. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL is the write speed of
the hard disk. mine was pathetic. despite 2.0ghz processor and 512mb ram
and ati processor and 40gb drive i do not have the performance to use
firewire downloads from a digital camcorder. it may be the mobo chipset or
the card slot is of the slower one who knows.

So make sure the mobo chipset is good, the hard drive performance is good
and you have 512mb of ram. I would doubt you would notice the difference
between 512mb and 1gb unless you were doing something specialised. nor do
you need more than 2.0ghz for anything. more important would be a decent
graphics chipset. ati mobile 9000 or better.

What most people forget is that sound cards can gain or lose you a serious
percentage of processing time. software sound processors chew up clock
cycles. you need a decent sound processor chip to tackle 3d sound and
surround. gain performance in games and reduce cpu usage with dvds.
incidently ati is better for dvd than nvidea.

What's the problems with the P4>? I have a 1.6GHz P4M and a 2.4 ghz
P4. Have not had any problems with them.

You

Rule number 1: If your fan is THAT loud, there's a problem with it.
As I've said before I've deployed more than a few thousand P4 laptops
(not the mobile type) and have had only a few that were loud or ran all
the time. We had those repaired and the problem went away.

Oh, and FYI: If you ever get around to opening a laptop, you'll
notice that the same fans are used by a manufacturer for P4s and P4Ms
and even the Celerone and Centrinos.

Yes, but the Pentium-M nearly needs never the fan,
while the other's need the fan often

But at what price? Fan noise! Heat!
