Solaris is free for non-commercial users. The download is free,
anyway, with most versions available, and if you have to buy
the media, I think it's ten bucks plus shipping.

Go to Sun's site anc check it out.

Yup, but that licence still only covers machines bought from Sun or an
authorised dealer, see:

http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris...s/faq.html#0q8

They've been moving things around recently, so I thought that clause
was gone, but unfortunately, it's still there. See also:

http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris.../policies.html

Point E, "Used Sun Computer Equipment"

The stupid thing is that the way the site is build at the moment, the
whole licence crud is completely misleading, IMO. On the main "Free
Solaris[sm] Binary License Program" page, they talk about "Developer"
and "Evalutation" licences and make it sound that no strings are
attached, while in the actual licence and the FAQ they sneak in the
"must have been bought from *us*" requirement again...
<sigh> Legalese...

Cheerio,

Thomas

P.S.: It would be absolutely cool if the change Rich mentioned was to
materialize - there's still hope.

Once my book is finished (not too long now!), I plan to step
up my Sun advocacey role a bit, but for now I don't have time.
I wouldn't mind getting involved with the Secret 6, too, but
that's out of my hands at present.
