I can now get serial console access to my sons SS5 (I still don't have the
root password for my SS4) and wanted to change the frame buffer
configuration so I can hook an SVGA monitor to it. I have a little dongle
that supports the following settings:

000 3,8,9 all ground
111 none
001 1600x1200@76Hz
010 1280x1024@76Hz
011 1152x900@66Hz
100 1152x900@76Hz
101 1024x768@76Hz
110 1152x900@76Hz Special for small monitor

I tried using fbconfig to configure the frame buffer but it says it can't
find the configuration program. I would have assumed it was installed with
the driver, but is that not the case? The device is /dev/fbs/cgsix0 and
fbconfig says the configuration program is SUNWcg6_config. I can't find
this program anywhere of course and neither can fbconfig.

What's a Sun newbie with no cdrom to do? Get the ISOs from Sun and mount
them on another machine for nfs to export?

There is no software config utility for cg6 - it predates the
introduction of those. Instructions on changing the resolution of cg6's
can be found at http://www.sunhelp.org/faq/FrameBuffer.html

Different cg6 models supported different resolutions - to find out which
yours do, find the serial number sticker (should be a bar code with a
number starting with 501) - the first seven digits are the part number.
You can then look at each of the cg6 models listed in the Sun System
Handbook at
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub...GRAPH_TOC.html
and compare their part numbers to yours until you find which one you
have and which resolutions it supports.
