hard drive problem ?????

Whilst recently formating a new maxtor diamondmax 30gb drive,4% into formatting
it i got the message "trying to recover allocation unit" followed by the number
it was trying to allocate ,it then proceeded to format the drive after about
four of these,does this indicate a problem with the drive,please help,thanks.
