Please help, ABIT IC7-MAX3, Sata 1 and 2

I have just purchased an ABIT IC7-MAX3 and have a question, I have a new
hard drive with a serial converter attached and it is attached to sata 1 via
the supplied cable. The only problem is that the bios does not detect the
hard drive, at the minute all I have done in the bios is selected optimized
settings and changed nothing else in the bios. Do I have to change anything
else in the bios for it to detect the hard drive, I would be grateful if
someone could give me step by step instructions how to set this up. By the
way when I have the drive connected the hard drive light stays on all the
time, if you need any more info I will gladly reply, thanks in advance.
