I have just built my first Shuttle:
Athlon 2000 XP Samsung 512MB DDR 2700 WD 1.6GB HDD Pioneer DVD-ROM 3.5" Floppy Having built the system I proceeded to use a boot disk to format the HDD & install my OS (linux). After about 3 minutes the system shut itself down and the CPU temperature LED came on. The heatsink/CPU did not appear particularly warm, although the PSU was warmer than I expected. I have checked all connections and that the ICE heatsink is properly secured. Thermal gel was applied to the AMD chip during install. The CPU fan is working. Having left the system a while I tried again & the same thing happend, but this time after running about 5 minutes. This is the first time I have used an AMD chip and having heard about issues with them running hot I am wary of trying again before I have some idea what the problem is. I do not want to melt the chip! I tried to access the BIOS to check settings there but could not get in. I tried various combinations of ctrl-alt-del after the instructed 'press del to enter setup' did not work. Can anybody point me in the right direction? Thanks. -- Regards Nick (remove 'x' from email address) |

I had extremely similar problems with my SN41G2 and WinXP Pro. 1) RAM Quality is an issue with XPC systems. 2) Too thick of a layer of thermal grease will impede heat flow and prevent the heatsink from working. 3) Make sure you have removed the blue film from the back of the CPU shim (if you are using it) 4) The first eight times I did it, I think I was screwing the ICE down crooked. The last time, I got all the threads started and went in a cross pattern, tightening each screw a half-turn at a time. It took longer, but everything works now. I posted some stuff at www.sudhian.com about this. Go to the FORUMS at the top, find the "XPC Shuttle ... " forum, do an advanced search and put in my username, "gsarnold". Good luck. Nick, it's hard to give a thought without knowing what temp. you are
running at. Please give it in C. and F. You didn't state what board you are using, but on the AK39N just go into the BIOS, PC HEALTH and the temp. is registered there. Do it immediately when you get the temperature warning/shutdown. This will tell us if you are really running hot or just getting false readings. |

I have followed the manual and tried using 'Del' after immediately after POST, and tried 'Ctrl-Alt-Esc', neither work. I have found a couple of articles in google groups whih suggest there may be a problem with the fitting of the heatsink. I am going to rebuild later today and let you know how I get on. This doesn't help me on the BIOS front though - I will try booting without any HDD or Optical drive installed & see if that gives me access.
