I've had my Dragon Plus operating for over 18 months now. Presently
I'm experiencing weird disk access problems.

Wondering if others have found oddball performance as this motherboard
ages?

I've had mine about the same length of time, and all is (still) well. The
only problem I've had was the cheapo power supply I had. Fixed that and
cruising nicely.

I've also had mine(as well as a standard Dragon) for at least that long.
Only problems I've had is a cmos battery on the Dragon about a month
ago,and a week ago I lost one HD in my raid0 array on the Dragon+.

Could it be the disk going bad?

Mainboards usually don't fail as they age; since there are no moving
parts (like in a CDROM or HD, there is nothing to fail as long as
there aren't any faulty factory parts like bad caps, but those usually
fail within a few months if they are going to.

May I suggest checking out your harddrive? It may be in the early
stages of failing. Try to run scandisk; if you see bad sectors, note
where they are, and in a few days check back and see if there are
more. My suggestion is to immediately backup your data off-computer.

Ouch...i know how that feels... i lost my HDD twice!! i bet you have IBM 75
GXP series...
I hope you did have backup!?! And - at this point RAID 1 would be so better,
right?

You got that right(GXP 60's).
Of course, everything is backed up on the regular Dragon which is running
raid1 on a pair of 60's,not to mention the really critical stuff is also
on CD..
I could never understand why ppl say a raid0 array is more
risky.Yes,with multiple drives the odds of failure do go up,but in
reality not as much as you would think. If you're running your OS and
stuff on a single drive, say off of IDE1 and that disk goes TU,you're
just as toasted as if you lost 1 drive in a 2 disk array.

More risky if you take into account RAID setup. In this case, 0 is more
risky than 1, but not more than not RAID, sure.
I think in whole this thing if you wanna performace, then RAID 5 (i think)
is far better, since it can do performance and security at the same time
(from my knowledge you have 3 HDD's - two for normal work and third for
rescue data in case of failure). Too shame that on-board controller can't do
that.

What kind of problems are you having?
I have a K7V, bought in August of 2001, that would occasionally quit
communicating with the hard drives. If I reseated the cable at the MB
all would be fine for a while but the problem would always start up
again. I swapped cables several times, changed IDE channels but nothing
seemed to fix the problem. I don't know that it was the MB. It could
have been a CD-RW drive on IDE 0 that went bad. By the time I
discovered the bad CD drive I had already moved to replace the K7V.

Jim,

I have similar problems with my Dragon+. I was having both stability
issues and disk access problems.

When I pulled my system apart, I found 6 capacitors bulging/leaking on
the board. I was told by Soyo that my board was no longer under
warranty, so I chucked it and bought a new one... all my problems went
away.

Look carefully at the capacitors on your board. If the tops or sides
are bulging, or their is brown crusty layer (almost like rust) on the
top of the capacitor or on the board around the capacitor, then you
have found the problem.

It really ****ed me off, as I paid a pretty penny for this board at
the beginning of last year. I replaced the board with an Abit NFS7-S
from googlegear (~$120). I am happy with the Abit, although I had to
add a PCI drive controller for my extra (non Serial ATA) hard drives.
The Abit board comes with a three year warranty.
