I want to go out and buy more ram for my system
I have a soyo p4vda mainboard with 256 ddr 2100
ram currently. I searched the soyo site for memory
information but couldnt find anything.

My questions are:

can I just buy one more stick of 256 2100 ddr or do
I have to buy 2 of the same brand/model?

What memory slots can I put the new stick in?

Could I mix types of ddr ram like 2100 and 2700?

If I did decide to go all out and buy a bunch how
do you get more than 3 sticks of 256 in there since
it only has 3 slots but claims it can use 3 gigs of ram?

Thanx,
Christopher

It's best to use the same type and brand memory. But this is not to say you
can't use another brand. But your far less likely to have compatability
problems by using the same brand.
You simply by the memory in larger sizes to get up to the 3 gigs of ram, ie:
three sticks of 1 gig each.

I'd recommend just buying another stick of 256mb in PC2100, the P4VDA was
never set up to run with PC2700, and while it would likely work (depending
on the PC2700 you bought) why take a chance? The board is not "dual channel"
or anything, pretty much any 2 sticks of DDR 266 (PC2100) should be OK.

The use of faster memory PC2700 in a motherboard that only supports
PC2100 is not a problem at all. But mixing PC2100 and PC2700 together
on the same board should work (memory will just set itself to run at
the slowest speed) it has been known to cause problems. With Soyo
motherboards being very picky on memory I wouldn't recommend mixing
the two. You should also never try mixing two different brands of
memory. The memory timings between the two differnt brands could also
cause you problems. Problems related to memory can be anything from a
failure to boot to unexpected system crashes and also disk read/write
error messages. Also the use of Dual Channel memory on a motherboard
that doesn't support Dual Channel memory is fine. Dual Channel memory
only has extra operating instructions written into the SPD commands to
let them work together at a faster speed over regular DDR memory. Dual
Channle memory is the best way to find two sticks of DDR memory for a
motherboard because they are perfict matches to each other.
