This morning, in "Linux Journal", I was reading about Industrial Light and Magic's render-farm, which uses semi-custom Linux machines from Rack Saver. This is recent stuff, built to render 'The Hulk.' They made mention of using an obscure (but production) low-power Athlon 1600 in order to try and keep the racks and room cooler and to reduce power consumption in the hundreds of systems that crowd the space. I was surprised that they went 'only' for 1600's but I guess it isn't so much a question of out-and-out speed on any one process but rather the ability to run a boat-load of simultaneous rendering threads and processes. There were no further details. Whether this was an early T-Bred or some other beast (maybe targeted for laptops) wasn't clear to me. So I wonder if this is the 'low power' variant being mentioned?
