Thanks a bunch for the insights. This guy is stumped.

I guess I think this is a temperature problem because the system
acts like a temp shutoff is set at 45degC. (it isn't though) The
crash is infinitely repeatable: 45=reboot. Period.

Sometimes I will get a BSOD pointing to a windows driver. The
driver is different each time. However.. more common is no BSOD
just a <click> and Im back to bootup.

When I leave the case open with a big room fan blowing into the
case I have run video renders overnight. Normally video renders
die in about 10mins.

My case seems okay. I put a 2-ton copper heatsink on the cpu
and have two high flow case fans moving air. The machine sounds
like an airplane, :> but I don't care about the noise. Normally
the system hovers in the mid-30 degC. Only when I run 100% cpu
for 10mins can I get over 45degC.

Other clues: Conservative timings or aggressive timings in bios
make no difference. Removing cards/peripherals/devices leaving
a barebones system doesn't help either.

Anyway:

System:
D+ motherboard
Athlon-XP 2100+
2*256MB Crucible RAM (1 stick or 2 stick doesn't matter)
Antec 350W PSU (tried a 405W it but didn't help so I returned it)
Thermalright SLK800 heatsink + 38CFM Delta Fan
2*80mm 35CFM fans at front; 1*80mm fan sucking at rear

PCI Cards:
nVIDIA GeForce
generic modem
Extra USB-PCI card.

IDE:
1*120GB HD + 1*60GB (not RAIDed)
1*CDRW
1*DVD

CASE:
Full tower

SW:
Windows XP Pro (tried winME with same results)
Have wcpuedit cooling patch (or whatever it's called)

/* LowBall */

PS. Maybe another question I can ask is what things are likely
to be temperature sensitive. I kinda doubt the Athlon will
crap-out at 45degC. Assuming temperature is the problem,
something else is unhappy.

In article <Xns93B97672BF76Esomeonesomewhere.com@216.166.71.2 30>,
says...

Are you using wcpuedit to modify setting from within both WinXP and
WinME? If so do you have these problems when you don't use wcpuedit?

Changes made by using wcpuedit can be very unpredictable from system to
system. It's really not a good idea to be using it for anything more
then testing purposes.

OR........ you may just have a faulty processor. For the cost of a XP2100,
I'd try replacing if memory checks out ok.

it has to be your motherboard, thats the only thing that can shut
down the system automatically at a certain temp, you cont have any
hardware monitoring software installed do you ?

45 C may not even be accurate, but at whatever temp the
motherboard is sutting the machine down, so look closely there, the
cooler is a very good one, what thermal paste did you use ?

video cards crap out when too hot, maybe check that out, older
GeForce had small fans and ran hot

Try the two fans at the front 'sucking' into the case & the third fan
at the rear blowing air out of the case. As it is, your only exhaust
fan is the one on the power supply.
