According to my deskjet 5550 manual, the parallel cable is okay for XP. I
already had the cable from another printer; that's why I used it. Do you think a USB cable would work? Back to the original recommendations, remove all traces of the parallel printer before trying to connect to USB, and follow HP's instructions for installing the printer.
