Ben, to give you an idea of all the crap that's lying around in everybody's
registry, just go to http://www.ashampoo.com and download their trial of
Winoptimizer (I think that's what it's called).

I ran that at someone's suggestion with this OfficeJet 630 problem of mine.
It shows how many extra, unnecessary entries are in your Registry. It will
only remove 33% of them each pass (To remove them all, you should purchase
the official version). It also makes a backup copy of the registry to allow
you to restore it easily, if desired. It found OfficeJet entries, but it
didn't solve my problem (I guess, because the trial copy doesn't remove all
that it finds).

I was amazed at all the stuff it found, and how much space I recovered using
the different modules. The trial copy impressed me. I may actually spend
money on this one......

Um, it gets worse and worse, depending on which software you run. I have a
client with a pair graphic artists hard at work. They use Corel Draw, AutoCAD,
and who knows what else. Every so often, I go over an wave my magic wand to
restore system performance to what it was when the system was first installed.
It seems that one or more of these software packages beat on the registry
unmercifully. The net effect is that the registry becomes badly fragmented from
the repeated updates made by the software. Of course, defrag does not
defragment the registry, because defrag cannot reasonably work on a file that is
currently in use, and the registry is ALWAYS in use. When the registry gets
badly enough fragmented, the system runs about as fast as a glacier on a cold
day. So my magic wand simply defragments the registry.

Clever software design by Microsoft and all the software vendors, isn't it?
