I need to pull out the old one and replace it with a new one. Is it
easy to put in an extra driver?

There are PHYSICAL CD/DVD DRIVES and CD/DVD DRIVER software.

If you need to change the PHYSICAL drive, use your Dell service tag to find the
service manual for your model of Optiplex on the Dell web site. The service
manual will tell you how to do it. With most Dell systems, changing the drive
is very easy. You open up the chassis and the drive either slides out to the
rear, or you have to remove the plastic front bezel to remove the drive from the
front. Installing a new drive is the reverse of this process. Make sure that
the jumper setting on the back of the replacement drive agrees with setting on
the original, usually Cable Select (CS) for Dell.

Now for CD/DVD drivers. If your system is running Windows 2000 or later or any
variant of Linux, you do not need to install any software DRIVER to use a CD/DVD
DRIVE, because the CD/DVD driver is built into the operating system. So you do
not need to install any software driver to use the replacement drive.

However, you may need to install different or updated software to burn (record)
on CDs and/or DVDs. If you are using CD burning software delivered by Dell with
your Optiplex, you generally do not need to do anything. There are several
freeware CD/DVD burning packages that work well... Ben Myers

You mean an extra "drive", a "driver" is the piece of software which
interfaces with the drive.

Have you done any research on external cd/dvd drives?
Theyre pretty neat. Also try out external ram.

I hope this info helps.

Almost any (100% of them?) CD/DVD drive with an IDE/ATAPI interface, any SATA
CD/DVD drive with a suitable motherboard BIOS, and (with caveats) any SCSI CD
drive are all recognized automagically by Windows 2000 or later during the
install process and an appropriate standard driver is used. Same with your
typical Linux distro. True fact. You can trust me on this one.

Even Windows 95/98/ME, those paragons of stabilty, would allow one to change out
an IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drive for one with the same hardware interface.

The only time when it would be necessary to change DRIVERS for a CD/DVD device
is when one changes the physical interface used by the drives. With SCSI CD
drives no longer being produced, AFAIK, and SATA CD/DVD drives not being too
prominent yet, replacing one CD/DVD drive with another is almost always a no
brainer.

Now if you want to go way back in time to the days when DOS was king and CD-ROM
drives operated at 4x with a strong tailwind, there were all kinds of stupid
CD-ROM drive interfaces and proprietary CD-ROM cards with... proprietary CD-ROM
DOS-mode device drivers. Fortunately, nobody in their right mind messes with
these any more, only people who want to "restore" an old Packard Bell 386 to
original condition, for example... Ben Myers
