Of course you realise that a user opening a computer case will void
    their warranty?

That's a good idea! Void your warranty over a AU$10.00 fan. Absolutley!
And I suppose you recommend that new car manufacturers should include
a manual on how to change the engine of their new car?

    dumbass...

Maybe it was a joke. :)
Even if it wasn't a deliberate joke, it turned out to be one.

That's not always the case (pun, heh). Besides, look at where this has
been crossposted - mostly into homebuild (where the parts are under
warranty) and upgrade groups (gotta open the case anyway). Most likely
    YHBT.

    > That's a good idea! Void your warranty over a AU$10.00 fan.

By the time the fan starts to make a noise the machine will most
likely already be out of warranty.

Vehicle's owners manuals do tell you how to change the oil, coolant,
etc. Not to mention that you *can* get the shop manuals if you want...

Then what the hell does it have to do with OEMs and retailers? If it's
homebuild, no-one has any obligations after selling you the parts. If
the salesman came up to me and said "...and this is how you should oil
the fan..." after selling me a new graphics card over the counter, I'd
    probably hit him.
People in upgrade groups should know the easy stuff like this already,
and if not, are already in upgrade groups, where they can get the help
    they need.

So what's the point of this webpage?

    Every fan/heatsink works differently. It's removed/opened differently.

A manual can help figuring out exactly how to open it without breaking
    anything etc.

You go back to driving school every time you get a new car?

All you need is common sense. A boycott is a pretty severe call to make
just to protect people who want to mess around with electronics without
having to think. You'll basically be boycotting everyone anyway. No-one
that I've seen provides any such literature.

    All the techs reading:
    1) Have you replaced heatsinks and/or fans in computers?

    2) Did you read a manual the first time?

This is not enough. I have plenty of common sense. When my power fan was
dirty for the first time, I did not know I could clean it.

Somebody else told me how to do it. This is something you just have to
happen to know otherwise one would never have guessed it.

It's something that definetly deserves a place in a manual. Especially for
people that don't have internet :)

I was lucky since I could ask around on a newsgroup. Most people don't even
know what a newsgroup is. Some people don't even have internet access.

Those people are left in the cold.

No, this is something that's blindingly obvious, and not even something that

Nope since a crucial part of it is literally hidden. I am not saying what is
hidden, that's up to the manufactures =D

Seriously, it's easier to replace a noisey fan than to bother lubing
it. Dust doesn't easily get into the bearings of the smaller
CPU/graphics card sized fans and they're certainly not worth the
    effort disassembling/reassembling them.

Nobody told me. I just saw dust on it and thought "That can't be good, I'll
clean the dust off and keep it in a less-dusty place from now on".

No, those people pay techs to fix it or buy a new PC. You're either into
hardware, and educate yourself about it, or you're not, and pay someone else
    who is.

Did you get a manual with your VCR telling you how to dismantle it and clean
the heads? No? A hobbyist would learn, a punter would pay someone else to do
    it. Same goes.
