    A 'clean' filesystem is one that is marked as having been dismounted
    properly at the last shutdown. The fsck checks for that flag, and if
    it is set does not check the disk. The f flag basically is a way to
    override the normal action and force an fsck. It does not handle the
    journalling. If you want to fsck a disk that has journalling turned
    on, you need to turn it off first. I think that requires a reboot.
    Then you can run a fsck on the filesystem.
