Time to reinstall? Windows Installer Service could not be accessed!

I am working on a Dell XPS 400 which has Windows Media Center 2002
installed. IE7 and Outlook 2000 wouldn't load. Avast 4.8 turned up nothing.
Ad-Aware 2007 wouldn't run or reinstall with Ad-Aware 2008. Got Spybot
installed and it turned up with "virtumonde.sci". Got rid of it which fixed
the first error message below and IE and Outlook 2000 started to function
again.

~~~~~~~~~~
RegisterClassObject failed: hRes = 0x800706BA
The RPC server is unavailable.
Maximun retry attempts exceeded
~~~~~~~~~~

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the
Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personal
for assistance.

~~~~~~~~~~
Disk Management
You do not have access rights to Logical Disk Manager on...
~~~~~~~~~~

Now the last two error messages pop up. The Windows Installer message pops
up just about with anything I try to install. Reregistering the service
doesn't help, nor did reinstalling Windows Installer. Checked the
permissions under Regedit and System, administrator, and user are all ok.
Also Outlook 2000 email links won't work most of the time.

I am a big believer that *most* systems never need to be reformatted and can
be fixed. Although I am considering maybe in this case, it might be best. As
I haven't figured out how to solve this one yet. Since the hard drive is a
SATA one, none of my BartPE boot devices will touch the hard drive. Although
I got Puppy Linux to read it, but won't write to it. So I copied everything
to another drive. So theoretically, I can always copy everything back it
should be back as is. Since I can't install most things, none of my drive
copy and partition programs will work either. Any thoughts?

(crosspost slashed to minimize expected flame war)

When I begin to suspect damage to Windows native utilities or system files
(which sounds like the case with your description), I'd probably run a
CHKDSK /F or /R from the XP CD recovery console just for S&G to see if that
corrected the errors/corruption/damage. Boot into Windows to verify
function.

If it's still borked, I'd offload anything I wanted to keep (and scan it at
the new destination for bugs if necessary), and just do a clean install.

jmo.

Thanks Stew! Although I don't think my Windows XP (orig) and Windows XP with
SP2 install discs will touch that SATA hard drive. Although I can tell it to
scan and it will say it will during the next reboot. So I'll give that a
shot. Thanks again.

Bill,

If you have a Dell XP SP2 install CD or even an OEM one, the install CD
will find the SATA just fine, format a partition on it, and install on
the SATA drive. Microsoft got HUGE pressure from all the drive
manufacturers and major OEMs to slipstream SATA support into SP2, and so
they did. Had they not done so, we would all be screwed, wouldn't we?
Or maybe simply continuing to use EIDE PATA drives... Ben Myers

Oh okay Ben. I didn't know that since all of my BartPE CDs and flash drives
won't touch it. And they were all created from Windows XP SP2 systems. I
guess Bart didn't include support for SATA drives or something.

The user does have a Dell Recovery CD (or is it a DVD?). And I will give my
Windows XP SP2 disc a try to see if it can read it first. Hopefully it can.
I love to do a repair install, but I don't expect the Recovery disc to offer
this option. And my Windows SP2 disc isn't a Windows Media Center edition
anyway.

Hi Ben! I just tried the Windows XP SP2 retail disc and it can't see the
SATA drive either. I made a BartPE CD from this Windows on the SATA drive
(thinking it would pick up the SATA driver) and it reports the iastor.sys
file is missing (which appears to be only a Dell/Intel problem). I don't get
this from my other BartPE CDs and flash drives. Although the CDs will load
and will not see the SATA drive while the flash drives end up with a blue
screen (those were created differently though and they don't like any
desktop just laptops for some reason).

I think there's a very real possibility that a rootkit is involved
somehow.

If that's true, you can never be sure whether or not you've removed
all of it, as the operating system will be lying to you and most of
your tools. And if you want to satisfy any curiosity you may have, a
tool like F-Secure's Blacklight (don't know if this is publicly
available) or SysInternals Rootkit Revealer (free from Microsoft
SysInternals) may turn something up.

I would have a very hard time trusting any system that behaved in that
way, and my first response would be to save anything that couldn't be
infested (if needed) and blow all the rest of it away.

Windows XP SP2 doesn't (at least not that I can find) contain *any*
drivers for SATA controllers that are running in AHCI or RAID modes.

If a SATA controller is running in ATA/IDE emulation mode, Windows
XP's setup routine will see it. You can change that in setup if
needed, but I suspect that if you change it back later (even if you've
already loaded the drivers somehow) that Windows will STOP with an
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error after the change.

If you can get an appropriate drivers package from the chipset
manufacturer, you can provide the system with a disk ("Press F6 if you
have a third party drivers disk...") containing the drivers. This has
to be a floppy drive, connected to the motherboard's floppy connector
or hooked up via USB with the BIOS providing an emulation layer so
Windows Setup can see it.

Dell customized their Windows XP CDs to have the Intel Matrix Storage
drivers already available.

Oh wow, bummer! Thanks a lot William. I don't like being pushed into a
corner, but it looks like I don't have a choice.
