Hi everybody,

Can someone explain in very simple words what this card below does? It
is called a TV tuner. Is it to receive TV channels on a PC? What does
ATSC/QAM/NTSC mean, for the layperson.

Many thanks

Sorry for asking such naive questions.

More importantly, how can I tell if I the car will work in my
dimension e521? I opened the hood, and it looks like there is a slot
for a card like that one.

Ok, I am answering my own question. It looks like I have a free PCI
slot, so I should be in good shape.

Still a question, what kind of channel am I going to receive? The same
as those on my traditionnal tv set?

thanks

Hi!

> Can someone explain in very simple words what this card below does?

It receives TV channels (and sometimes FM radio as well) and displays
whatever is being broadcast on your computer screen. Sound plays through the
computer's speakers. The cards I'm familiar with also support closed
captioning and many can act as the cornerstone of a digital video recorder.

ATSC is digital television that is typically received over an antenna
attached to your TV set. It is the "digital TV" that will become the only
option for those with regular TV sets and antennas to watch after February
2009 in the US.

NTSC is the standard for current "analog" TV broadcasts coming from an
antenna attached to your TV and how they are displayed on your TV (in the US
at least...other parts of the world have different standards).

QAM is typically used with cable TV systems, and I don't know much about
that one...

William
