I want to upgrade my cpu and wonder what the optimum cpu my k725a
board will allow?

Just ran sisoft sandra and heres the specs for what ive got at the
moment:

ECS K7S5A 1.0
BIOS ID: 62-0920-001437-00101111-040201SiS735

Current CPU:

AMD Athlon 1.1Ghz
Model No. 1178
Performance Rating: PR1588
Packaging: Socket A PGA
Multiplier: 11x
Generation: 7th (7x86)
Revision/Stepping: 6/2(0)
Stepping Mask A5
Core Voltage Rating: 1.750V
Model Information: Duron M6 & Athlon4/MP/XP (Palomino) 1-1.8G
1.7-1.75V

Whats the maximum cpu i can upgrade to? Would it be more cost
effective/worthwhile to upgrade both cpu & motherboard and what
factors should i take into account when considering this?

Would be grateful for any feedback you can provide.

TIA

I have the same mainboard K7S5A Rev. 1. You will first need to update your
BIOS. I use an unofficial BIOS-HoneyX. This BIOS can be found using the
link below. I have been using it for 6 months now on two separate K7S5A
Rev. 1 boards. I have had no problem. Board 1 has a 1700+ and board 2 has
a 2400+

If you want to use ECS's official BIOS go to www.ecsusa.com

The max. CPU you can use is an Athlon 2600+ Thoroughbred Core 266/FSB. The
2600+ is difficult to find these days. The 2400+ and sometimes the 2600+
can be found at

www.newegg.com

Merry Christmas!

Many thanks for your resonse Nystagmus.

i just wondered what the advantage is in using the unofficial bios?
You would have had a reason for choosing it over the standard
bios...just curious

For future reference, where do you come upon this upgrading info as i
cant find it where it definitely should be readily available ie. on
the manufacturers website!

Martin,

There are two unofficial BIOS' for the K7S5A. One by HoneyX and another by
Cheepoman. Debates rage on as to which one is better. I chose HoneyX for
no particular reason. So far it has worked without a problem. The HoneyX
and Cheepoman BIOS' have an advantage over the ECS Official BIOS in as much
as there are some overclocking options in the BIOS, for instance they have
more options to OC the FSB.

There are other options but they are rather pointless (unless you want top
benchmark scores) and don't offer any real day-to-day benefit.

The following link takes you to a forum where others more knowledgeable than
I discuss all thinks ECS mostly the K7S5A mainboard. This link will also
take you to the HoneyX BIOS downloads. Be sure to read the first topic
thread by Oken "The K7S5A BIOS flash guide FAQ". I followed his
instructions and my BIOS upgrade(s) went without any problems.

The following link will take you to another forum that discusses the K7S5A
and has links to the Cheepoman BIOS upgrade.
http://www.ocworkbench.com/ocwb/ulti...ubb=forum;f=35

You will not find much upgrading info if any all on the ECS website.

Have fun reading.
