Underclocking a Barton 2800+ that was overclocked

I've been thinking of replacing my VA503+ based system w/my formerly
overclocked Barton 2800+ and underclocking the Barton to acheive a <hopefully>
silent system. If I went low enough, would it be possible to undervolt the
Barton and maybe get a way w/just a bare heatsink (say a Thermalright SK7)?

I would imagine for that, you'd need to remove all case covers and perhaps
even, lay it on its side (not sure how well the HDD's will adapt though -
some say that changing orientation part way through life can shorten it ...
but I have my doubts).
If you get a 35watt XP-mobile 2600+, you should be able to run it at some
seriously low voltages.

Don't know about your 2800+ , but I was successfully running an XP2400
undervolted @ 1.50v down from nominal 1.65v. It did indeed have the effect
of lowering sys temps. Underclocking is also a tactic many people have had
great success at. It, of course, requires an unlocked processor. One
additional tidbit ... make sure the bios on the replacement board supports
these various adjustments. It's only through experimentation that you will
gain your answers.

Best of luck,

Garry

This may work for undervolting.

Get a TR2-M1 cooler (about $8), 21dba. You won't here it over the PSU fan
and HD's and you can still run the 2600+ at full speed. If that's still
too loud, lower the fan speed from the default 2500rpm down to about 1500.
I just installed a 2100+ that I ran at 2166MHz in my brothers system and
clocked it to 1300MHz (13x100), lowered vcore to 1.50v (lowest his board
supported), put a large hybrid HS on it aand it runs under 40C. Now if you
use software cooling, and don't run heavy loads on the cpu, you can trully
get by without a fan altogether. I've done that even at full cpu speed.
Clock your 2500+ at 11x100 and vcore 1.50v or lower and use software
cooling and it will run fine without a fan. Still a fan that just silently
moves a little air would help a lot.

Is better that u buy a AMD XP 2600+ Mobile "MainStream" 1.45V. It have
0.3 V less of consum. It can be disipated with a 8cm 900 rpm silent fan.

Try It a have a 2500+ MainStream Mobile and It can run a 3500+ with a
simple Pasp 1500 rpm with a ThermalRigh 900.

No sorry you can underclock a 2800+ even if it's locked, lower the FSB.
Defaults for 2800+ are 166.6 x 12.5 = 2083 mhz
133.3 x 12.5 = 1666 mhz
100 x 12.5 = 1250 mhz
at 1250 mhz you should be able to drop the vcore a lot and have a very cool
and quiet system, you might be able to use just the air flow from the power
supply to cool it if the case lets the air flow through the cpu easy.
