Upgrade Compaq Hard Drive

A customer of mine has a Compaq Presario 5004US. It's 60GB HDD died.
I tried to replace it with a Western Digital WD800 80GB. The BIOS
sees it but when I start the recovery CD a screen comes up and says
Recovery CD Error Contact Compaq Support. Of course the PC is out of
warranty so they won't talk to me without $$$. I tried the drive right
out of the package, i tried it after fdisk and format as 1 drive, i
tried it after partitioning it into 2 drives. All with the same
result. Any solution to get the recovery cd to install on this new
drive?

I believe that when your using the recovery cd's, it leaves certain
files on the drive, to initialize the recovery.
i suppose your best bet is to find out what files, or yet better
get a proper version of windows for it
