I am thinking to upgrade from a K7S5A with Athlon XP 1900+ and 512MB
PC133 to either a VIA KT600 or Nvidia nForce2 mb with Athlon XP 2600+
(Barton) and 512MB DDR400. Will I see any improvement in speed in any
of the two?

I went from a K7S5A with an XP 2000+ and 512 MB DDR 266 to an MSI K7N2
Delta-L (nForce 2 Ultra 400 motherboard) with an XP 2600+ (333 FSB) and 512
MB DDR 333 and noticed a definite improvement. I ran a couple of benchmarks
(3D Mark 2001 and Aquamark 3) and confirmed increases in performance of
around 35 to 40 percent.

If you want a more professional opinion between nForce 2 and KT600
motherboards, suggest you read the following article at Tom's Hardware:
http://www.tomshardware.com/motherbo...107/index.html.

Cheers.

I nearly did the same, only difference is the previous CPU was an XP 1700+
and the present Mobo is an Asus A7N8X board. Everything else was the same as
JAU and I fully agree, you can see the improvement. On both systems I'm
running Win2k SP4. Very happy with it.
However, you shall not expect a real big change, like the one I did moving
to the K7S5A - XP1700+ from the old i440BX - PII 450... but you should
expect something you can see without using a benchmark, the more so as
you're getting DDR400 memory instead of PC133.

I had an accident with one of my k7s5a's a while back - upgrading to an
xp2000+ from an athlon 1ghz. My s5a only has a one tab wide 'landing zone'
under the cpu socket which makes installing a 3 tab wide heatsink clip a bit
of a challenge (the other two tabs have small IC's right underneath them -
less than a millimeter of clearance while attaching and a very strong spring
on the clip). Result - dead k7s5a

I looked around, and decided on a kt600 board - one reason being it's what
was available in my area. I've been quite happy with the performance of
this system so far, although I've had a couple of lockups that are
repeatable that i'm still tracking down (only in Everquest and while running
DScaler so far - thinking it might be powerstrip causing some problems). I
usually wait until I can double my CPU speed before I do an upgrade, btw,
and always try to get the most upgradable mobo I can get at the time.
Usually my mobo's live through 2 cpu's and then it's time for an upgrade.

I've seen so many reports of unexplained lockups with the VIA KT600
chipset that when I upgraded my K7S5A, I got an Asus A7N8X-X Nforce2
board, and have been *very* happy with it.
