Is there such a thing? All the comb cards I have seen to date have
been for the SB1500 and 2500. Will they work on a SB 2000?

Yes -- I am using one in my SB-2K. Look for the 375-3140 card
for the SB-1500 and SB-2500. I've not tried the FireWire ports in it,
but I am using the USB 2.0, and seeing a significant decrease in the
download time when I have a bunch of photos to download from a 4GB CF
card from my camera.

Enjoy,
DoN.

Most cards should work since the registers on IO boards are standardized
so one driver "should" fit all, I have Belkin ones both for USB and
Firewire.

Excellent, thanks. I'll look for one.

Found one on eBay for $25 plus shipping. I should have it in a wekk or
so.

Sounds like the fellow I got mine from. He keeps putting them
out.

I just tested a SATA docking station on my SB-2K, and here are
the results for "newfs"ing a 250 GB drive through three options:

Built-in FireWire: 1:03.00
Card's USB 2.0: 0:07.39
Card's FireWire: 0:04:13

so the card with FireWire wins, with the card's USB 2.0 being not too
bad, and the system's built in FireWire being deadly slow. :-)

I didn't even bother trying the built-in USB 1.?. :-)

Enjoy,
DoN.

Presumably your card is Firewire 800?

It looks like Sun have the same problem with the built-in Firewire that
Apple had on some of their boxes. There seemed to be a dodgy FW400
chipset that was slower than USB2 High Speed.

I honestly don't know. It is the card which Sun installs in the
Sun Blade 1500 and Sun Blade 2500. Sun's barcode for the card is:

375-3140

The FEH entry calls it:

IEEE1394/USB Combo Card

and it is also listed for some servers:

Sun Fire 4800, 6800, V880z

On the corner of the board is:

RC80 145 Rev B0

and one of the chips is labeled:

PCI 12205

but that is probably the bus interface chip, not the FireWire
implementation chip.

*Much* slower. How about a factor of 8.23 or so? :-)

Enjoy,
DoN.
