Hi,
I'm interested in buying such a HDD, but I notice that they're
enclosed in a container that probably doen't have enough air
circulation. Don't they heat up and then go to hard drive heaven?

I Would like to buy a HDD, encase it in a home made airhole-riddled
case and connect it somehow.....you tell me how?

Have I been smoking the wrong stuff??? Or, is it a logical project to
attempt.

Mike

I've had a commercial 40GB pocket drive for, oh, 1.5 yrs or so now,
and so far have had no heat problems (knock knock)

Hi Michael,
The commercial drives should be fine. You shouldn't need a case
riddled with holes. Besides, one with holes will be more likely to get
dusty or dirty anyway. All you should have to do is be sure that you
clean any air holes that a commercial drive does provide,
occasionally.

Just get one that has a fan in the back & don't try to run it 24/7.
For very light use most models are fine.

Hi! I believe what you guys have been talking about is an internal IDE
hard drive enclosed in an external enclosure, which is also known as
drive case, that can be connected via USB or FireWire port. This is
one of the famous ways to building a cheap external hard drive.

Well, normally there's no heating problem over these external hard
drives, which are housed in external enclosures, because they offer a
fan at the rear side for air circulation.

Plese take a look at the following URL for more information:

Hope this helps!

Kanguru, BUSlink, and Seagate make really good external drives. They
also have them in combo's, which means you get them in both USB and
Firewire. Remember that you can not boot your system from an external
drive.
