I need more USB ports for my Dell 2400, and am looking at a USB hub.
The one at the URL below is made by Kensington, and is mentioned as being
perfect for laptops. However, if I purchased this device, I would use it
for my desktop computer. Is there any reason why this Kensington USB hub
wouldn't function properly on a desktop machine?

No, but a larger one might provide more status
feedback.

I think I know what you mean. The device below has this feature:

it will work, but there are advantages to getting a desktop specific usb
hub.
one feature that some desktop hubs have is longer cable so that you can
connect the usb hub to the desktop under the desk but keep the usb hub up on
top of the desk (making it easier to connect/disconnect devices). they
don't show the cable in the link you provided but i suspect it is very short
(under a foot).
another feature of a desktop hub is that some have vertical facing ports.
these are great for inserting memory sticks or small music player type
devices into.
and perhaps the most important feature of desktop hubs vs laptop hubs is
that some desktop hubs are powered (meaning they have their own ac adapter)
and so can support a broader variety of devices that draw power via the usb
port.
i like this one...

or with more detail from belkins site...

"desktop under the desk" should read "computer under the desk"...
funny thing that 'desktop' computers today don't usually sit on the desk...

I like this one and have not had any problems with it:

The two top ports are very handy.
