| I want to buy a cheap second scanner for my wife to use with her laptop.
I'm
| leaning towards the Canon lide50 scanner which is under $100 and includes
| photoshop elements 2.0. It happens to be powered through the usb cable (no
| AC adapter) and I wanted to make sure it will work off a laptop. My
concern
| is that it might be too hard on the laptop's power supply. I realize the
| laptop's ports are powered, but are they powered just enough for mice? She
| always plugs in the laptop; it won't be trying to go on battery. The
laptop
| is a HP ze5170 (p4 2.0) with usb 1 ports. Other things connected to the
| laptop are a mouse (usb) and a wireless card in the slot. I realize the
| scanner will be slow but that's fine. I have a fast hp scanner for MY
stuff,
| but it's not portable enough for what she needs it for. And I was going to
| buy photoshop elements 2.0 anyway, so this would be a great buy for me if
it
| will work. But I sure don't wanna fry the laptop, or find out the scanner
| won't work without going out and buying a powered hub (not an option as
she
| wants as few doodads to worry about as possible). Anyone have any
experience
| with that? Thanks in advance.

Hi John -
I can run my Canon N1240U scanner, which gets it's power from the port,
using the USB port on my Sony R505EL laptop without any trouble. The
scanner draws 500ma of power, exactly the specification for what the port
supplies.
