Preinstalled XP on a Dell will validate just fine.

I've avoided doing so, too, and advise my clients to do the same. There's a
lot to be said for having the security blanket of original and official install
media, despite the tendency of Micro$oft to discourage people from having it.

Windows media player 11 requires the Windows Genuine Annoyance
(advantage) tool to be installed. It's available via windows updates.
One of the most common reasons for a failed validation is an incorrect
time setting.

Also WMP11 requires service pack 2 to be installed.
