Video/sound streaming too fast

I'm having problems when playing video and music files on my computer.
Both the picture and the sound is playing to fast (2x normal speed?).
The problem does not occure while playing cds on the CD Player that
comes with Windows 2000. But when I'm playing the same cd using
Microsoft Media Player, the sound is playing too fast. Also, all mp3,
avi, mpg etc files are playing too fast.

My multimedia hardware consists of:

Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM AC '97 Audio Controller - 2445

Any suggestions? (Do I need to provide more information regarding
multimedia hardware?)
