Vospro 400 freezes at Dell logo

My three month old Vospro 400 sometimes, at start up, freezes at the
big DELL logo. Dell's answer was to do a full power down - disconnect
the power cord and press the start button for ten seconds. This does
work but is inconvenient. Dell also updated the bios. The Vospro
worked fine for a couple of weeks but the same problem came back.

Before contacting Dell support again does anyone have experience with
this failure to load the bios?

Thanks,

Pierre

I can tell you that a work around on a new machine is BS. Call Dell and tell
them you want it fixed or a new machine.
This is not the way a machine is suppose to boot, I don't care what Dell
tells you. One other thought, it could be
a Operating System issue but locking up at the dell boot screen would
indicate bios. You could have a boot virus.

Could be the new BIOS version if it was fine before, OR try disconnecting
(temporarily) all external hardware other than the monitor.

A USB device (failing to load/initialize properly) could cause that very
symptom.

I'd like to add to the already good advice. Could be bad RAM. If you have
two sticks, remove one and try the machine. If the machine boots and runs
fine, you've found the culprit. Then try the other. If one or both of the
sticks is/are bad, Dell should make good under warranty. Hope this helps.
Best, JG

Thanks for the help so far.

To further define the problem:

Freeze at DELL logo is instant - that is no bios progress bar showing.

Updated the bios from 1.0.3 to 1.0.10. Fault was also on the old bios
- hence the new Bios was installed by Dell.

Dell did a virus scan using Superanti Spyware. Don't know if this
checked the boot system.

When fault occurs I removed all peripherals except the keyboard, mouse
and monitor - PC has same fault.

Is there any RAM or USB in use the instant bios first try's to load?

Realize I will have to talk with Dell again, just wondering if anyone
else had experienced this specific problem and how did they fix it.

Thanks,

Pierre

Go to page 181 and follow the instructions on "Clearing CMOS settings".
You've got a CMOS/BIOS system board problem going on and resetting the CMOS
might provide some help.

Keep us posted.

Hi Stew,

Thanks for the CMOS pointer. One more question for you:

The boot fault occurs about every two to four weeks - very
intermittent. We shut the PC down each night. Would you wait for the
boot freeze to occur and then reset the CMOS or would you do it now?

Thanks again,

Pierre

Your choice.

It's my belief (guess) that this is an intermittent USB initialization screw
up, and I think it may continue to be an issue for you (sorry) regardless.

I'd go ahead and reset the CMOS now, as it won't harm anything.

I hope I'm wrong about the problem persisting.

Let us know how it's getting on as you have time -

Stew
