Want to build a nice Vista computer

I would like to build a nice Windows Vista machine. I'd like to use an
ASUS MB but am wondering which one. I'd like to run RAID 1, it also
would be nice to have at least one IDE channel to run CD Rom/DVD
devices.
There is a nice deal right now on:

2GB (2 x 1GB)Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-1000 PC2-8000 desktop
memory kit (with LED lights)

unless you don't think much of that memory. I probably would use a
Core 2 Duo processor, not sure which one but at least the 6600.

I'm open to suggestions and input please.

I would really reconsider RAID. In my own experience, I have seen no
difference in performance at all, but it introduces lots of
complications. Others have posted the same thing.

While Asus makes some good boards, the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 is a very
good basic board that you can get for $100.

The E6600 is about $230; the E6420, a new chip, is under $200 and also
has the 4MB cache memory system. You can get 2x1GB of DDR2-6400
(800MHz) memory for $100 also. There is no point in faster memory.

Agreed, but 2 weeks is not forever. The E6600 was introduced last July,
and the first major price cut was just 2 weeks ago.

2 weeks is not forever but eventually you have to make a decision......and
as soon as you do there will be something new on the PC marketplace.
I waited for the April Price cuts....waited for a less expensive Nvidea
based chipset(the 680 was too expensive) and finally 10 days ago bought a
Gigabyte N650SLI DS4 mobo with an 6420 Intel c2d and some lovely Patriot LLK
low latency ddr2 6400 RAM....Canadian Price $600.00 all total.

There's an easier way to do this. Instead of trying to hit the
hardware market just right, wait for the software market. You do it
like this.

1. Wait for Vista Service Pack 1.
2. Wait two to four weeks for any disasters to be noticed and
reported.
3. Buy the best hardware you can afford. (Be sure any necessary new
drivers are available.)
4. Install Vista.

Then you don't have to have regrets (except about Vista). You got the
best hardware you could afford at the optimum time to buy.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will look into that P35-based
motherboard for sure. I'm not in a big hurry either, maybe I should
wait until fall instead of this spring and summer.

I'm considering the ASUS P5B-Plus at $139, but the Gigabyte also looks
interesting. When I go to Newegg, I see two GA-965P-DS3 listed. One (rev
1.3) is $100 and the other is $130. Do you have any idea what the
differences are?
