Which is better?

Apple TV allows syncing with iTunes (i.e., copying stuff from iTunes to the
A TV's hard drive) or using AirTunes.

Which do you think is the better way to do it?

AirTunes requires that iTunes be running, and a wireless remote (because
the computer is in a different room from the AV system); fortunately, the
Remote application on my iPhone takes care of that.

Syncing takes up storage space on the A TV's hard disk and requires a new
sync any time new material is added to iTunes.

So there's definitely a tradeoff involved.

Just sync with iTunes - much simpler and easier. No need for AirTunes,
remote, blah, blah.

I have an ATV and it works so flawlessly that I haven't really
considered replacing it. Of course, I don't use it for music either,
just video.

I've found that my network is quick enough that I don't sync all that
many things, the streaming function within my network is more than good
enough and I just use the ATV's little remote.

I have an Apple TV, but I have not tried Airtunes, so I can't really
compare them. However, I can tell you that neither hard disk storage
nor synching are a problem for me in using the ATV. I mainly use it for
a music library that has been mostly ripped from CDs, plus an
occasional purchase through iTunes. I synch the iTunes library to a
30GB iPod and the 120GB ATV. I haven't managed to fill up the iPod yet,
so plenty of space left on the ATV. Synching to the ATV happens
occasionally automatically, and by a single button press if I have just
added something to my iTunes library that I want copied to the ATV.

The occasional video use of the ATV involves synching from iTunes,
watching, then deleting both from iTunes and the ATV, so no long-term
storage of video material on either my desktop Mac or the ATV.

Since the Mac is in my office and the ATV is in the living room 30 feet
away, it is convenient not to have to iTunes running to use the ATV.

Kind of reading betwixt the lines, I think she does more audio than
video.

With my setup, I use the ATV with some things sync'd, but usually run
iTunes on my iMac with the library ext HD attached to it and stream
whatever I need. No real delays, no hiccups over the internal network
either.

As to the mini, yep, the mini would be ideal, IF they had put an HDMI
connection on it with full audio/video support. Using DVI and
optical/coax digital sound means not getting the newer audio codecs.
That's one thing I had hoped for in the new Minis.

BTW, new software out for the AppleTV. Different user interface and
they've added the itunes radio to it.

To play stuff on iTunes through my surround sound system, and to watch
video material (TV shows, movies, etc.) on my big-screen TV, with the sound
coming through the surround sound system.

Not an option; I already have the Apple TV.

Actually, it's currently more video than audio-only.

Indeed. The ATV uses 802.11n, as do my Intel Macs. Everything else --
TiVo's, iPhones, iPods, and the like -- I keep on a separate wireless
network. Thus. with the Apple TV on a very fast network, I don't push
anything to the ATV; I stream everything and it works perfectly.
