Why to buy soundcards (e.g. X-FI creative, etc)?

Thats it, with most motherboard comming with 7.1HD which for 99% of speakers systems is most than enough (i guess you need like a 1000+ system to notice any difference?) why buy soundcards? Also in the old days onboard audio sucked but now a days they rock.
